Overbite correction

Overbite correction in Asheville, NC

An overbite is one of the most common orthodontic issues. While everyone needs a small overlap between their top teeth and their bottom teeth, they shouldn’t overlap too far. If the vertical-plan overlap has an excessive overbite of over 2-3 mm, you’ll most likely experience misalignment symptoms. You may require orthodontic treatment to correct it and regain a healthy, beautiful smile.

What can cause an overbite?

Several factors can cause an overbite. The most common reason is the shape of your jaw and teeth. If there isn’t enough room in the mouth to fit your teeth, it can lead to overcrowding. As your teeth try to get into position, this overcrowding can cause an overbite.

Multiple external factors can lead to an overbite as well. In infants and young children, overusing a pacifier or frequent thumb-sucking may cause the tongue to push up against the back of the teeth. Similarly, adults who have the habit of biting their nails or chewing on things like pencil ends can cause teeth to shift, resulting in an overbite.

Occasionally, genetics can play a role. This type of misalignment, which is referred to as a skeletal overbite, is inherited and results in irregular jawbone structure shape and development.

Overbite symptoms

One of the first things you’ll notice if you have an overbite is that your front teeth overlap quite a bit past your bottom teeth. This can lead to a range of other symptoms, including:

  • Trouble chewing and eating.
  • Difficulty opening or closing your mouth.
  • Difficulty speaking.
  • Popping sounds coming from your jaw.
  • Jaw stiffness and/or pain.
  • Headaches.
  • Earaches.

Why fix an overbite?

An overbite isn’t just a cosmetic concern. While it can affect your facial structure and smile, an untreated overbite may also cause a great deal of discomfort and pain. Even daily tasks like speaking and eating can become difficult.

Over time, an untreated overbite usually gets worse, leading to a range of health concerns like teeth and gum decay and even damage to your jaw structure.

Treating and getting an overbite corrected as soon as possible prevents more involved and costly orthodontic treatments in the future.
