Everyone knows that dentists take care of teeth but not everyone is informed about what an orthodontist does.  This can lead to misunderstandings about what our staff does for our patients and how we can help them. Here is a closer look at some of the myths and misconceptions about orthodontics:

1. We’re just like your dentist.

It’s true that we both help you have a lifetime of good dental and oral health; we play different roles in helping you achieve this. Dentists can help with cavities, tooth decay, gum disease and other common oral health problems.

Many times, when a patient sees an orthodontist they are concerned about the alignment of their teeth.  Many patients you’ll see in our practice have braces, or need to be fitted with braces or another form of tooth-straightening device. Your family dentist may also refer your child to an orthodontist once the adult teeth have fully grown in.

2. We only treat children.

It is true that many times at an orthodontic clinic you will see a lot of kids but you will also see teenagers, college students and adults. Crooked teeth can be caused by a variety of factors, so, it’s possible for someone to seek orthodontic treatment at any age.
